FEBRUARY 2017

MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR

Dear Friends,

February is the month for many exciting holidays… some of them well-known to us and others a bit more obscure. Groundhog’s Day was February 2nd, Valentine’s Day is February 14th and Presidents’ Day will be February 20th . Then there is Kite Flying Day (February 8th), Umbrella Day (February 10th), National Gumdrop Day (February 15th) and National Fairy Tale Day (February 28th) just to name a few. At the Institute the one very special day that stands apart from all the rest is February 11th – the birthday of our namesake, Mr. Burt Reynolds.

I would like to take this opportunity to express to Mr. Reynolds our sincerest wishes for a day filled with all the best life has to offer. All this and more is deserving of the man who has made all of our lives better than they would have been had he not shared his great talent with us.

While gift giving is always a part of birthday celebrations, the Turner Classic Movie Channel has taken that tradition to a new level by putting Bandit fans on the receiving end. At various times during their broadcasts, TCM will be sharing Mr. Reynolds’ personal memories of Spencer Tracy with the viewing audience. Those of us at the Institute have had many opportunities to hear directly from Mr. Reynolds his stories about Hollywood and the many friends he made over his 50 plus year career. Now it is time for fans to share in the experience.

Apple of My Eye, the heartwarming and inspiring story of a young girl, who defines herself by her equestrian abilities and then struggles to accept the loss of her eyesight after a terrible accident is setting DVD and digital sales records. Mr. Reynolds plays Charlie, a Guide Dog Trainer who introduces the girl to Apple, an affectionate miniature horse who becomes her new eyes and new best friend. Another Reynolds’ sure hit – Pocket Listing – will be available on DVD next month after a successful theatrical run on both the east and west coast.

Our fundraising efforts with the Dream Giveaways Sweepstakes are continuing. There has been some confusion regarding the Trans Am offered at the Barrett Jackson auction in January and the one offered through the sweepstakes. Fear not… Mr. Reynolds has had many cars over the years and these are two very different vehicles.

Everyone at the Institute sends warm congratulations to master class student David Ausem on his recent promotion to Assistant Production Coordinator on the Spike TV series Lip Sync Battle.

SCENE STUDY and CHARACTER ANALYSIS with Todd Vittum ON HIATUS
Mondays at 7PM (except for the first Monday of each month)
Todd Vittum teaches an advanced class in scene study and character analysis, which includes intermediate and advanced acting techniques. The class will be offered three Monday evenings a month. Please note that there will NOT be a class on the first Monday of each month. There WILL BE classes on the second, third, and fourth Mondays of each month. The off week will give students an opportunity to perfect whatever scene or monologue they are working on for presentation in class. Students are required to bring their own scenes and should provide three copies-- one for the student, one for the scene partner, and one for the instructor. Learning to choose material that is right for you is part of your training. If you have any questions, the instructor will be able to help you decide on the proper material. A 2-3 minute monologue is required for the first class. This class will allow actors to hone their acting skills while providing an opportunity to study scene structure and character development. Scene study is the foundation of all performance and is instrumental if actors are to develop an emotional connection to the character they are portraying. Scene study is also used to teach the vocabulary of acting and how to respond to a director's instructions. Character analysis helps an actor to understand the role they are playing. To be successful, an actor must replace their personality with that of the character being portrayed. However, it is still necessary for an actor to allow their natural emotional response to a situation to show through at appropriate times. The ability to blend the real and the imagined creates a more stable and dynamic character. For the moment, the class will be held in in the Commission Chambers. Please contact Donna Carbone at 561-743-9955 or email info@burtreynoldsinstitute.org to RSVP now.
